How to Choose a General Contractor in Florida

By Coast to Coast Construction Group · Published October 11, 2026

Choosing a contractor is a decision about who will manage your home, money, and schedule. A polished proposal is useful, but the underlying scope and communication process matter more.

Check the business behind the proposal

Search the Florida DBPR license portal for both the individual and business. Compare the names with the contract and ask who will supervise the job. Request insurance documentation and recent references for projects similar to yours rather than relying on photographs alone.

Compare how the work will be managed

Ask how subcontractors are coordinated, who schedules inspections, and how changes are approved. A named project contact and a written update schedule can prevent confusion. Ask references whether the contractor explained problems promptly and documented decisions.

Your next planning step

Bring the same project description to each consultation. Ask every bidder to identify exclusions, allowances, and the assumptions behind the schedule.

Prepare for a productive consultation

Bring photographs, available plans or a survey, and a short list of priorities. Separate essential work from optional upgrades so the discussion can produce a clear base scope. Share the budget range you are comfortable considering and explain any deadline that affects your plans.

Ask the contractor to identify what can be confirmed during the visit and what needs further investigation. Record selections, exclusions, and unanswered questions in writing. A useful estimate explains its assumptions and responsibilities; it should give you a basis for decisions rather than only a number.
