Storm Drainage Planning for Florida Homes

By Coast to Coast Construction Group · Published October 11, 2026

A drainage project should begin by identifying where water comes from and where it can appropriately go. Installing a drain at the lowest point without understanding the whole site may simply move the problem.

Observe the site during rainfall

Photograph ponding, downspout discharge, and the paths water follows. Note whether the issue occurs during every shower or only a heavy storm. Share observations of neighboring runoff and changes caused by recent paving or landscaping.

Design an outlet and maintenance plan

A collection point needs a suitable discharge route. Ask how grading, roof runoff, and proposed drains interact. Have the team confirm property constraints and required approvals, and explain how accessible cleanouts or inspection points will be maintained.

Your next planning step

Bring a survey and rainfall photographs to the consultation. Ask for a plan showing collection points, discharge direction, and how the system can be serviced.

Prepare for a productive consultation

Bring photographs, available plans or a survey, and a short list of priorities. Separate essential work from optional upgrades so the discussion can produce a clear base scope. Share the budget range you are comfortable considering and explain any deadline that affects your plans.

Ask the contractor to identify what can be confirmed during the visit and what needs further investigation. Record selections, exclusions, and unanswered questions in writing. A useful estimate explains its assumptions and responsibilities; it should give you a basis for decisions rather than only a number.
