Sun Shelves in Florida Pools: Size, Shade, and Use

By Coast to Coast Construction Group · Published October 11, 2026

A sun shelf can create a shallow lounging area, but its design should be specific to your household. Depth, furniture compatibility, shade, and the remaining swimming space all deserve attention.

Define what the shelf is for

Decide whether it primarily supports lounging, sitting near the water, or an entry transition. A shelf is not a substitute for supervision or the required safety plan. Review dimensions with the actual furniture you intend to use.

Coordinate the details

Ask about shelf depth, surface finish, circulation, and any umbrella provisions. Furniture manufacturers may limit the water depth their products can accommodate. Check that the shelf and steps leave enough room for the rest of the pool activities.

Your next planning step

Bring furniture specifications and shade preferences to the design meeting. Compare the shelf footprint with the remaining water area before approving the layout.

Prepare for a productive consultation

Bring photographs, available plans or a survey, and a short list of priorities. Separate essential work from optional upgrades so the discussion can produce a clear base scope. Share the budget range you are comfortable considering and explain any deadline that affects your plans.

Ask the contractor to identify what can be confirmed during the visit and what needs further investigation. Record selections, exclusions, and unanswered questions in writing. A useful estimate explains its assumptions and responsibilities; it should give you a basis for decisions rather than only a number.
